Slade misses last-gasp kick as Toulouse deny Exeter famous win

Exeter Chiefs fell just short of a historic Investec Champions Cup victory in a thrilling, high-scoring clash at Stade Ernest-Wallon, as Toulouse fought back from a two-man deficit to secure a dramatic 43-40 win. The match took a dramatic turn early when prop Rodrigue Neti was sent off in the 16th minute for dangerous shoulder-to-head contact, leaving Exeter with 14 men for the remainder of the game.

Despite the setback, Exeter’s Zack Wimbush, playing on the wing in place of injured England international Immanuel Feyi-Waboso, scored a hat-trick of tries to keep his side in contention, while Toulouse’s Antoine Dupont and Romain Ntamack led their side’s late surge. With time running out, Exeter’s Henry Slade missed a potential game-tying penalty, handing Toulouse a narrow but hard-fought win in a match packed with eight tries and multiple disciplinary incidents.

The 2020 champions were ultimately denied a famous victory, settling for a losing bonus point after a penalty attempt sailed wide in the dying seconds.
