Saturday Night Massacre puts Phillies' season on the brink

The Philadelphia Phillies suffered a severe 12-1 defeat against the Tampa Bay Rays at Citizens Bank Park, dropping their sixth game out of the last eight and bringing their September record to 9-14. This latest slide leaves their postseason hopes hanging by a thread heading into the final day of the regular season, requiring a win and a desperate defense of their wild-card standing against Arizona.

To try and salvage the rotation, manager decisions forced veteran Aaron Nola onto the mound on just two days of rest for the first time in his twelve-year career, an experiment that failed after he surrendered three runs in a single inning. The team now turns to ace Zack Wheeler for Sunday's matchup to rescue their playoff aspirations, facing Tampa Bay's Nick Martinez.
