Sanju Samson breaks silence on competition with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for opening slot: ‘Can’t get negative and sulk'

Following a quickfire 57 runs from 22 deliveries in India's second T20I against Afghanistan, Sanju Samson shared his perspective on battling for a top-order spot alongside Abhishek Sharma and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. Samson, who had managed just 10 runs off eight deliveries during the opening clash, helped secure an insurmountable 2-0 series advantage under the leadership of captain Shreyas Iyer and head coach Gautam Gambhir.

Despite Sooryavanshi sitting out after claiming Player of the Series honors in Zimbabwe—where he tallied 151 runs across three fixtures—Samson emphasized that national success takes precedence over personal frustration, remarking that squad members must avoid sulking over selection calls.

Samson also discussed navigating external criticism, humorously noting his attempts to keep internet connectivity switched off to avoid chatter from observers and former cricketers. The wicketkeeper-batter previously faced omission after the T20 World Cup, struggling across two fixtures against Ireland and one against England before briefly returning for the fifth English encounter.

Acknowledging that past scrutiny occasionally stung, Samson explained that his accumulated experience now helps him block out anxiety over potential dismissals so he can execute aggressive strokes freely.
