Daniil Medvedev’s semi-final exit at the Shanghai Masters took an unexpected turn when he threatened to retire after a dispute with the umpire over a video review. During his match against Rafael Jodar, Medvedev claimed Jodar’s forehand had missed the line, but umpire Adel Nour initially refused to show the full replay, only confirming Medvedev’s missed return.
After a heated exchange, Nour relented, and the replay confirmed Medvedev’s mistake. Despite the controversy, Medvedev lost in straight sets (3-6, 4-6), ending his campaign early.
The incident sparked debate among former players, with Sam Querrey dismissing Medvedev’s threat as ‘all talk,’ noting both players had faced recent controversies—Medvedev for striking a fan in Beijing and Jodar for an altercation with a ball kid. Querrey also praised Jodar’s consistency, highlighting his strong performances across multiple tournaments since April, including a final appearance in Shanghai and a title at the Grand Prix Hassan II earlier this year.
Both players remain in contention for ATP Finals qualification, with Jodar set to rest before his next event in Basel and Medvedev as the top seed in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
