Sam Houston has dismissed Phil Longo as head coach following a difficult tenure that saw the team manage only three victories across twenty games. The program struggled significantly under his leadership, finishing with a 1-11 record in Conference USA play and failing to reach the end zone in three of their previous four matchups.
Athletic director Bobby Williams cited the need for a change in direction to improve the team's competitiveness. Following the decision, the university has appointed defensive coordinator Freddie Aughtry-Lindsay and special teams coordinator Eric Raisbeck to serve as co-interim head coaches for the remainder of the season.
This move marks the end of Longo's second stint with the Bearkats, a period that followed his previous roles at Wisconsin, North Carolina, Ole Miss, and an earlier tenure in Huntsville.
