Ryan Armour delivered a standout performance at the Furyk & Friends event on the PGA Tour Champions, posting a 9-under 63 to claim the lead after the opening round. The 50-year-old, who had been struggling in his rookie season, embraced the challenge and capitalized on the early tee time, which allowed him to play on fresher greens following recent rain.
His round included five birdies per nine and just one bogey, a par-4 13th, as the Ocean Course played softer than expected after the weather cleared. Armour’s strong start put him three strokes ahead of Paul Goydos and Rod Pampling, who both shot 64s, while Vaughn Taylor, Billy Mayfair, and Michael Wright finished at 67.
The tournament adjusted tee times to 8 a.m. for the second round, taking advantage of the improved conditions.
Armour’s turnaround came after admitting he had been ‘in dad mode’ earlier in the season, lacking the necessary preparation for his first full campaign on the over-50 tour.
