Russo, James both score twice as England beat Greece in World Cup play-off

England’s Women’s World Cup play-off campaign took a decisive turn as they crushed Greece 5-0 in the second leg at King Power Stadium, securing an 8-1 aggregate victory. Lauren James and Alessia Russo each scored twice, with James opening the scoring before doubling her tally in quick succession, while Georgia Stanway added a header to seal the rout.

The Lionesses had trailed 3-1 after the first leg, but their dominant display in Leicester—including a debut goal from Freya Godfrey—ensured they progressed to face Ukraine in the next round. Sarina Wiegman’s tactical adjustments, including resting James for Beth Mead’s late cameo, underscored England’s depth as they closed in on World Cup qualification.
