Get startedSix-time major champion Rory McIlroy has weighed in on the unraveling of LIV Golf, calling the Saudi-backed league’s financial approach flawed and its future uncertain. Speaking at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in New Delhi, McIlroy argued that LIV’s $300 million bankruptcy restructuring plan—backed by an initial investment from BC Partners Global—may not be enough to revive the league, which has lost key players like Jon Rahm, David Puig, and Adrian Meronk.
Sergio Garcia’s contract was also terminated, and other players are reportedly seeking similar exits. McIlroy, who alongside Tiger Woods led the PGA Tour’s resistance to LIV in 2022, suggested the league’s billions from the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund were squandered rather than invested wisely in golf’s future.
He emphasized that LIV’s decline reflects poor execution of an idea that could have been stronger with strategic partnerships and governance alignment, rather than simply enriching already high-earning players.
