Wasim Jaffer has publicly argued that Rohit Sharma should have remained the captain of the Indian ODI team and the Mumbai Indians franchise. Jaffer suggests that Sharma's leadership experience and current batting form, highlighted by scores of 101 and 92 in recent matches against the West Indies, would have been invaluable for the 2027 World Cup cycle.
While acknowledging that Shubman Gill has performed capably since taking over the role in October 2025, Jaffer believes the transition could have been delayed until after that tournament.
Meanwhile, Tilak Varma has credited Sharma for his mentorship regarding leadership development. Varma, who was recently appointed to lead the India A squad for an upcoming series in New Zealand, noted that he frequently consults with Sharma to better understand tactical decision-making and field management.
