Red Wings' Simon Edvinsson heads to Sweden as he awaits new contract

Unsigned restricted free agent Simon Edvinsson has traveled back to his native Sweden to participate in practices with Frölunda in Gothenburg while contract negotiations with Detroit continue. The 23-year-old defenseman had previously arranged his own insurance coverage to take part in training camp workouts with his teammates without participating in exhibition contests or scrimmages.

Interim general manager Shawn Horcoff indicated that discussions between the organization and the player representatives remain ongoing ahead of the season opener against the New York Rangers.
