Detroit faithful gave a hostile reception to veteran forward Dylan Larkin on Friday as the club opened its campaign against the New York Rangers. The former captain was greeted with heavy jeers inside the arena when his image appeared on the video board alongside the healthy scratches.
This backlash stems from a trade demand made by the Michigan native during the offseason following ten consecutive years without a postseason berth for the franchise. The forward had previously voiced frustration with team leadership over the lack of playoff success and requested a move to select destinations including the Golden Knights, Panthers, or Minnesota club.
The trade demand sparked significant turbulence for the organization, preceding the departure of long-serving general manager Steve Yzerman in July and the removal of the player's captaincy title in September. The team entered the new campaign without a designated leader wearing the 'C' on their jersey.
Despite the ongoing tension, the skater remains tied to a lengthy contract carrying five remaining seasons on a deal signed three years prior, while missing the season opener due to an upper-body injury.
