The Boston Red Sox suffered a significant blow ahead of Game 2 of their American League wild-card series against the New York Yankees. Manager Chad Tracy confirmed that outfielder Roman Anthony is finished for the remainder of the postseason after exacerbating an existing hand injury during his two plate appearances in the opening matchup.
Anthony traveled back to Boston overnight following Game 1 and underwent additional scans on Wednesday morning, which uncovered further deterioration in the hand that previously sidelined him for 55 contests this year. Tracy noted that the second-year athlete is struggling psychologically with the setback while communicating via text message about his strong desire to remain on the field with his teammates.
With Anthony sidelined, the club plans to adjust its active roster for the second game of the series and potentially the subsequent AL Division Series, while turning to Nate Eaton in left field and Jahmai Jones as the designated hitter against opposing pitcher Max Fried.
