India’s vice-captain Tilak Varma made history in the third T20I against the West Indies by becoming the fifth Indian fielder to reach 50 catches in the format, joining an exclusive group that includes Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, and Virat Kohli. Varma achieved the milestone in just 68 appearances, boasting the highest dismissals-per-innings ratio (0.757) among Indian fielders with at least 50 catches, trailing only UAE’s Muhammad Waseem globally.
His efficiency places him among the most impactful outfielders in modern T20I cricket, with Rohit leading the Indian chart at 65 catches, followed by Hardik (64), Suryakumar (58), and Kohli (54).
Despite the milestone, Varma’s own batting was overshadowed by an unusual run-out in the 17th over, where he and Axar Patel mistakenly celebrated a boundary before realizing the ball was in play. India recovered strongly, posting 223/4 thanks to Abhishek Sharma’s 69, while Arshdeep Singh (3/26) and Naman Dhir (2/30) led West Indies’ collapse to 209/7.
The victory extended India’s series lead to 2-1, cementing Varma’s growing reputation as a defensive cornerstone in white-ball cricket.
