Former Indian team director Ravi Shastri has expressed lingering frustration over the 2016 selection process that blocked him from continuing in the top coaching role. Despite serving in leadership from 2014 onward, he was asked to apply through a formal hiring cycle, ultimately seeing Anil Kumble appointed by the Cricket Advisory Committee.
Shastri believes underlying motives influenced the outcome, contrasting his prior contributions with the sudden administrative shift. Later, after Kumble departed following a year in charge, Shastri assumed the head coaching responsibilities in 2017 and led the squad through a successful multi-year tenure.
