KOLKATA — Brazil will be without Raphinha for their highly anticipated friendly against India on October 3 after the Barcelona forward was ruled out with a thigh problem.
Raphinha was substituted at half-time during Brazil's 4-2 victory over Australia on Tuesday after experiencing discomfort in his right thigh. He had scored Brazil's second goal from the penalty spot before being withdrawn.
The Brazilian Football Confederation said medical imaging revealed a small muscular oedema in the posterior region of his right thigh. Brazil have decided not to risk the 29-year-old and have released him from the squad. No replacement will be called up for the India friendly.
Raphinha will return to Barcelona, where he will undergo further assessment and treatment. Initial reports indicate that the issue is not considered a serious injury, but Barcelona's medical staff will monitor his condition closely.
The timing is particularly significant for India, with Raphinha's absence removing one of Brazil's biggest attacking names from the historic fixture. Brazil's squad still includes Vinicius Junior, Endrick, Bruno Guimaraes and Marquinhos for the October 3 meeting in Kolkata.
Raphinha's injury occurred after an impressive start to the season. AP reports that he has scored 15 goals in 10 appearances for club and country so far this campaign.
For now, the focus will be on his recovery in Barcelona and whether he can return in time for the club's upcoming fixtures after the international break.
