As the Ranji Trophy season begins, Indian cricket leadership is prioritizing the identification of high-velocity fast bowlers to revitalize the national team's pace attack. Recent struggles in Test matches against Sri Lanka and white-ball series against the West Indies have highlighted a decline in the ability of Indian pacers to consistently secure wickets regardless of pitch conditions.
Former selector Madan Lal attributed this dip in quality to the prevalence of T20 cricket, which favors batting over sustained bowling efforts. While previous standouts like Jasprit Bumrah remain active, others such as Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav are nearing the end of their careers, and newer prospects like Umran Malik and Mayank Yadav have faced fitness challenges.
The BCCI is currently monitoring developing talents including Mukesh Choudhary, Mohsin Khan, Karthik Tyagi, Praful Hinge, and Nachiket Bhute through its Bengaluru Center of Excellence to bolster the national pool.
