The Milwaukee Brewers have added Brandon Woodruff to their World Series roster, replacing Chad Patrick. The 33-year-old two-time All-Star has not appeared in a game since July 4, after struggling with velocity issues in May and July.
Despite expecting to undergo shoulder surgery this summer, he avoided the procedure and returned to form after a 23-pitch live batting practice session on Tuesday.
Brewers president of baseball operations Matt Arnold noted the risks involved, as league rules prevent the team from replacing Woodruff if his shoulder injury recurs. This gamble is based on Woodruff's history as a dominant pitcher, including a 3.10 career ERA with Milwaukee, the best for any player with at least 500 innings.
This season, he posted a 2.98 ERA over nine starts, while his career playoff ERA is 3.18 across eight appearances.
