The Philadelphia Phillies have finalized plans to retain Don Mattingly as their manager for the 2027 season, according to multiple sources. Mattingly, who took over as interim manager on April 28 after replacing Rob Thomson, led the team to a turnaround from a 9-19 start to a fourth-place finish in the National League standings.
Despite struggles in offense and bullpen performance, his familiarity with the roster and player respect proved pivotal in securing his return. The decision follows former Red Sox manager Alex Cora’s repeated declines of the role, clearing the path for Mattingly’s extension.
Phillies president Dave Dombrowski, who initially pursued Cora, is expected to address the team’s postseason exit and future plans in a press conference on Thursday.
