The Vancouver Canucks' penalty-killing struggles deepened in a 4–1 loss to the New Jersey Devils, as three of the Devils' four goals came during Vancouver's shorthanded sequences. The Canucks managed just one power-play goal from Linus Karlsson, while goaltender Leevi Meriläinen recorded 31 saves on 34 shots faced.
Vancouver made lineup adjustments after their previous defeat, removing Aatu Räty and Victor Mancini and inserting Brendan Gallagher and Luke Schenn, which left the team with only three natural centers, including Drew O’Connor on the third line. The penalty kill was particularly vulnerable, surrendering goals on nearly every penalty draw, dropping their season total below 50%.
The game also saw an unusual twist when Meriläinen’s skate blade dislodged mid-period, forcing backup Kevin Lankinen into action for a brief stint before Meriläinen returned. Despite the setback, Lankinen took the loss on his record after allowing the Devils’ game-winning goal late in the contest, despite Meriläinen starting and playing the majority of the game.
