During a heavy 35-6 defeat against Jacksonville, the New England offense dealt with mounting injuries along the front line. Backup right tackle Greg Van Roten exited in the second frame due to a thigh issue, while starter Morgan Moses played through an existing foot ailment before head coach Mike Vrabel pulled him late in the third quarter.
Rookie Caleb Lomu stepped in for his most extensive action yet, logging 26 total snaps consisting of 20 blocking at right tackle and six additional appearances as an extra tight end. Vrabel explained that the late-game switch was simply a chance to give the young player experience during an out-of-reach blowout rather than an immediate challenge for the starting role.
Additional personnel adjustments occurred down the stretch as the contest slipped away. Quarterback Drake Maye and center Jared Wilson were removed in favor of reserves Tommy DeVito and Ben Brown.
Walter Rouse also stepped into action following the injury to Van Roten, operating as the backup right guard. Despite the mix of depth pieces getting on the field, the unit struggled to protect the pocket throughout the afternoon.
