Oregon’s once-unassailable national title hopes have crumbled after a dismal 17-15 loss to UCLA, leaving the Ducks as college football’s most disappointing team just two months into the season. The program, which assembled a record-breaking $40 million roster and convinced star quarterback Dante Moore to return for one final playoff run, now faces an uphill climb after back-to-back defeats.
Moore’s absence forced Oregon to rely on backup Dylan Raiola, who struggled mightily in the loss—completing just 6 of 19 passes for 43 yards while throwing two interceptions and failing to sustain drives. On the ground, the Ducks managed a paltry 2.7 yards per carry and turned the ball over seven times, including a critical missed two-point conversion attempt that sealed their fate.
Even with UCLA’s starting quarterback exiting early due to injury, Oregon’s offensive line and secondary collapsed under pressure, exposing deep vulnerabilities in a team once considered a title contender.
The loss to the Bruins—played in front of a home crowd in Autzen Stadium—marked the end of Oregon’s limited margin for error. After a narrow road win over USC in Week 4, the Ducks had an opportunity to regroup before hosting UCLA, but their execution was disastrous from start to finish.
Raiola’s ineffectiveness and the offense’s inability to move the ball left Oregon with no clear path to redemption, despite their financial and athletic resources. With three weeks until Halloween and no room for further mistakes, the Ducks’ championship aspirations now appear all but extinguished.
