Although Ollie Robinson has earned commendation from veteran England seamers Stuart Broad and Jimmy Anderson for his performances during the current summer campaign, both senior figures harbor reservations about his ability to replicate that success when facing stronger opposition on unhelpful, unresponsive surfaces. Meanwhile, the visiting side's struggles have increasingly frustrated their followers at Edgbaston, where on day two a spectator brandishing a chalkboard demanding Imran Khan's release and inclusion joked with stationed officers that the current touring lineup was committing an offense on the pitch. Conditions deteriorated by Pakistan's second turn at the crease, as clear skies gave way to dense storm clouds rolling in from the south-west. Under switched-on floodlights, opening batsmen Saim Ayub and Azan Awais were tasked with surviving an attack led by the fresh-ball pairing of Robinson and Jofra Archer.
