Novak Djokovic advanced to his seventh China Open final after Daniil Medvedev was disqualified in their semifinal clash on Monday. The match took a dramatic turn when Medvedev struck a spectator in the stands with a ball during a rally, leading to an immediate default.
Djokovic, who was serving for the match at the time, expressed empathy for his rival, recalling his own disqualification at the 2020 U.S. Open after accidentally hitting a line judge with a ball.
Despite the unusual circumstances, Djokovic defended Medvedev, insisting the incident was unintentional and not a deliberate act. The Serbian star had dominated the match, leading 7-5, 5-3, and had already endured a grueling 2-hour, 29-minute battle, saving 16 of 18 break points before the match was halted.
Djokovic’s victory improved his undefeated record at the China Open to 33-0, with six previous titles under his belt. He will now face Alex de Minaur in Tuesday’s championship match.
