Alexander Zverev has officially claimed the ATP Year-End No. 1 ranking, marking a historic achievement for German tennis.
The 26-year-old secured the top spot after Carlos Alcaraz’s early exit at the Shanghai Masters, where Zverev defeated the second-seeded Spaniard in straight sets. His dominance this season included victories at the French Open and U.S.
Open, along with semifinal appearances at the Australian Open and a Wimbledon final. Zverev’s rise to No.
1 is the first time a German player has ended a season ranked world number one, and he becomes the oldest player to receive the year-end trophy, which will be awarded in November. The ATP Tour celebrated his milestone with a congratulatory message, while Novak Djokovic’s wife, Jelena, extended warm wishes to Zverev on his career highlight via Instagram.
Despite speculation that Jannik Sinner’s injury-related absence from the tour benefited Zverev, the German player dismissed such claims, expressing hope for Sinner’s full recovery. Sinner, who defeated Zverev at Wimbledon and has faced him five times this year, withdrew from the season due to a right knee injury, costing him ranking points that indirectly aided Zverev’s climb.
Zverev’s next match at the Shanghai Masters will be against Alexander Bublik, as he continues his push toward the season’s final tournaments.
