Northwestern is preparing to host Penn State on Friday at the newly reconstructed Ryan Field, which head coach David Braun lauded as the finest football venue globally. The 35,000-seat stadium is completely sold out for this initial matchup against the Nittany Lions.
This massive project, supported by a major contribution from the Ryan family, features upgraded amenities including premium seating with armrests and cup holders at every spot, along with a continuous open-air canopy designed to amplify crowd noise while shielding spectators from weather.
During previous construction phases, the Wildcats utilized Martin Stadium along the lakefront, where they secured an eight-win home mark, as well as Wrigley Field for late-season contests. To prepare for the unique acoustics and sightlines of the modernized arena, the team incorporated simulated crowd noise into Sunday practice sessions to counter potential logistical challenges.
Braun noted that while Friday brings a series of firsts for both squads, having prior familiarity with the new playing surface provides a crucial competitive advantage for Northwestern.
