Cricket South Africa (CSA) has secured a R65.6 million grant from the National Lotteries Commission (NLC) to upgrade nine stadiums ahead of the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, which South Africa will co-host with Zimbabwe and Namibia. The funding will enhance infrastructure across eight World Cup venues—including Newlands, Boland Park, St George’s Park, Buffalo Park, Mangaung Oval, Kingsmead, SuperSport Park, and Wanderers Stadium—as well as JB Marks Oval in Potchefstroom.
Key improvements at Newlands will feature a new scoreboard, ICC command center, upgraded seating, and safety systems, while Buffalo Park and Boland Park will receive new media centers and hospitality facilities. All venues will also benefit from specialized ground equipment like mowers and pitch rollers, ensuring world-class conditions for the tournament and future development of South African cricket.
The investment underscores the NLC’s commitment to supporting cricket’s growth, with officials emphasizing its role in fostering talent and community engagement. CSA’s Chief Financial Officer, Tjaart van der Walt, highlighted the grant’s impact on both the 2027 World Cup and long-term stadium sustainability, stressing accountability in fund allocation.
National Lotteries Commissioner Jodi Scholtz echoed this, calling the funding a pivotal step in preparing for the global event and nurturing future cricket stars for upcoming tournaments.
