UCLA football suffered a major setback Monday when starting quarterback Nico Iamaleava was diagnosed with a knee injury that will sideline him for the remainder of the 2026 season. The Bruins had just secured a hard-fought 17-15 victory over Oregon on Saturday, where Iamaleava exited the game early amid concerns that later proved worse than initially thought.
With 982 passing yards, four touchdowns, and four interceptions on the year, Iamaleava’s absence leaves UCLA scrambling to replace a dual-threat leader who also contributed significantly on the ground. Head coach Bob Chesney had hinted at deeper issues after the Oregon game, noting Iamaleava was struck in the thigh but could have additional complications.
The Bruins will now turn to backup quarterback Ty Dieffenbach, a Cal Poly transfer who threw for 1,305 yards and nine touchdowns last season while also rushing for 321 yards and four scores. UCLA’s schedule softens after this week, but the loss of Iamaleava—along with the challenge of navigating games at Minnesota and Michigan—could test the Bruins’ ability to sustain momentum without their star passer.
