The 2026 NFL season has kicked off with an unprecedented wave of penalties, setting a new record for flag frequency through Week 4. With 963 accepted penalties already called—more than in any equivalent stretch since 1978—the league’s early games have been marked by a staggering volume of infractions.
Week 4 alone saw 271 penalties, the second-highest single-week total in recorded history, as 12 teams each racked up double-digit fouls, including the Chargers (16), Browns (14), and Seahawks (14). The surge extends beyond sheer numbers, too: high-leverage calls on third/fourth downs and inside the red zone are at all-time highs, with 17 touchdowns nullified by penalties—nearly triple the average of the past decade.
Frustration is mounting as teams grapple with not just the volume of flags, but their timing, which has disrupted drives and altered game momentum in ways rarely seen this early in a season.
