NFL Panic Meter: With Baker Mayfield out, Bucs' backup plan at QB might wreck their season

Tampa Bay faces a difficult stretch after Baker Mayfield suffered a dislocated thumb during a defeat against Minnesota. Coach Todd Bowles confirmed that Mayfield will be sidelined for at least three weeks, leaving undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels to take over starting duties beginning this Sunday against Green Bay.

Daniels secured the primary backup role following training camp and a solid preseason after playing six college seasons at Kansas. General manager Jason Licht defended the risky decision to rely on an inexperienced rookie, noting the franchise preferred potential over mere veteran presence.

With the team currently struggling through a three-game losing streak and a difficult schedule ahead, the upcoming games will thoroughly test that controversial roster choice.
