NC State finalizing deal to hire Philip Rivers as next coach: Wolfpack betting big on program legend
NC State is moving to appoint former standout quarterback Philip Rivers as their head football coach. This decision follows the dismissal of Dave Doeren, who concluded his tenure with a 98-73 record after a recent defeat to Stanford.
Rivers, who previously led the program from 2000 to 2003, transitions to this role after coaching at St. Michael Catholic in Alabama since 2021.
The university aims to leverage his status as a program icon to boost fan engagement and financial support within the ACC. During his collegiate career under Chuck Amato, Rivers helped guide the team to an 11-3 finish in 2002, marking the only time the school reached double-digit wins in a single season.
