Mohammed Shami’s season has hit a setback as he was omitted from Bengal’s Ranji Trophy squad for their match against Services in New Delhi, raising concerns about his fitness. The 36-year-old fast bowler, who had been working on his comeback after a prolonged injury layoff, was seen moving cautiously before the toss and skipped the match as a precautionary measure.
His omission also extends to India’s upcoming Test and ODI series against New Zealand, where selectors have opted for alternatives like Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj in the pace attack. Despite his absence, Shami had shown promising form earlier in the Ranji season, taking five wickets in the match against Delhi, including a four-wicket haul in the first innings.
Bengal’s attack will now rely on younger pacers like Mohammed Kaif and Suraj Sindhu Jaiswal, while all-rounder Shahbaz Ahmed returns to the playing XI. Meanwhile, Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been recalled to the T20I team for the New Zealand series, filling the void left by the unavailable Jasprit Bumrah.
