MM 10.16: Maryland tennis’ Lucia Donnelly advances to main draw of ITA regionals

Maryland Terrapins tennis standout Lucia Donnelly made a strong start to the ITA regionals, securing two straight-set victories to advance to the main draw. The sophomore defeated Old Dominion’s Mya Byrd 6-2, 6-3 in her opening match, then turned around to beat Richmond’s Lucy Webber 6-3, 6-2 just four hours later.

Donnelly’s performance builds on her clutch play from last season, including delivering the game-winning point against Northwestern in the Big Ten tournament’s first round. With a 7-4 ITA singles record heading into Friday’s singles and doubles action, she and teammate Katherine Hung will look to continue Maryland’s momentum in the tournament.

In other Maryland sports news, men’s soccer head coach Sasho Cirovski’s efforts over a decade helped secure approval for a new Division I schedule structure, while longtime broadcaster Johnny Holliday celebrated his 89th birthday. Meanwhile, former Maryland men’s basketball player Jahmir Young was waived by the Los Angeles Lakers just one day after signing with the team.
