Philippine tennis sensation Alexandra Eala will miss the 2027 Philippine Women’s Open due to WTA ranking restrictions, despite her massive impact on the sport in her home country. The 21-year-old, currently ranked 19th globally, cannot compete in WTA 125 events like the Manila tournament, as the governing body prohibits players ranked 11th to 20th from entering unless granted a wildcard.
While this limits her immediate return, Eala still has a chance to play in the Philippines later in 2027, as the country will host a WTA 250 event in late October or early November—a direct result of the growing fanbase she helped cultivate. The Philippine Tennis Federation (PHILTA) confirmed the ranking rule as the reason, though Eala’s absence from the Australian Open in January could free up her schedule for the new tournament.
