The Mountain West and PAC-12 conferences boast some of the most unique rivalry trophies in college football, blending history, culture, and sheer creativity. At the top of the list stands the Fremont Cannon, a 545-pound replica cannon contested between Nevada and UNLV—a trophy born from a 1970s student prank that spiraled into a legendary rivalry.
The cannon isn’t just a prize; it’s a centerpiece of the game, sometimes even fired after touchdowns, and its weight makes it the heaviest trophy in college football. Meanwhile, the Milk Can, awarded to the winner of Boise State’s showdown with Fresno State, has become a symbol of community support, with dairy groups from Idaho and California funding the trophy since the 2000s.
Boise State recently claimed the jug for the first time since 2022, adding to its growing prestige in the newly realigned PAC-12.
Other trophies carry deep regional significance. The Bronze Boot, contested between Colorado State and Wyoming, honors a Vietnam War captain’s legacy and involves a dramatic 66-mile relay race to transport the game ball.
Wyoming’s other rivalries also stand out: the Battle of the Basins pits them against North Dakota State for a replica drill bit, reflecting the oil industries of both states, while the Aggies of Utah State clash with the Cowboys in Bridger’s Battle—a rivalry tied to firearms history. Despite conference realignment, these traditions endure, with Colorado State recently securing the Bronze Boot and North Dakota State taking the drill bit in a 28-0 victory over Wyoming.
