New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel responded sharply to Buffalo Bills safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson’s postgame claims after Sunday’s 29–26 loss.
Gardner-Johnson criticized the Patriots’ performance and falsely suggested the game-winning touchdown was scored by a practice squad player, a remark Vrabel dismissed during a Monday radio appearance. The touchdown receiver was actually Efton Chism, a second-year wideout who has been on New England’s active roster since joining as an undrafted free agent in 2025.
Chism, who saw increased playing time after Mack Hollins’ calf injury, caught two passes for 42 yards on the winning drive, including the decisive 23-yard score. Vrabel praised Chism’s work ethic, noting his extensive practice reps and physical preparation, while also highlighting the Bills’ misguided criticism.
With Hollins’ status uncertain and A.J. Brown still ineligible, Chism could see more opportunities against the Raiders this week, potentially adding to his growing role in the Patriots’ offense.
