Michigan football returns to action after a bye week, facing Penn State in a Week 7 Big Ten clash that could determine whether the Wolverines find their first conference win under head coach Kyle Whittingham. The Wolverines enter the matchup with a struggling offense, ranked 101st in scoring (23.0 points per game) and 121st in total offense (315.0 yards per game), with both passing (180.8 yards per game) and rushing attacks (135.0 yards per game) failing to generate momentum.
Quarterback Bryce Underwood, who has thrown seven touchdowns and seven interceptions, remains the starter but faces mounting pressure amid a lack of explosive plays (25 total, 129th nationally) and a third-down conversion rate of just 40.7%. Michigan’s defense, however, has been the team’s lone bright spot, ranking third in total defense (241.4 yards per game) and 20th in scoring defense (15.8 points per game), though their opponents so far have been weak offensively.
Penn State, meanwhile, brings a similarly inconsistent offense, ranked 72nd in total yards (392.8 per game) and 65th in scoring (30.5 points per game), but has averaged just 18.7 points in its last three Big Ten games. The Nittany Lions’ ground game has been particularly shaky, managing only 58 rushing yards per game over their past two outings.
Michigan’s secondary coach, Jermain Gilford, noted that Penn State’s offensive scheme carries over from their Iowa State days, though adjustments will be key for the Wolverines to capitalize on their defensive strengths and avoid another offensive collapse.
