Notre Dame’s storied wide receiver legacy expanded with ESPN’s latest ranking of college football’s top 60 receivers over the past 50 years, where two Fighting Irish standouts earned prominent spots. Tim Brown, the 1987 Heisman Trophy winner, secured the No.
8 position after his explosive career from 1984–87. Known for his versatility, Brown amassed 137 receptions for 2,493 yards and 12 touchdowns while also contributing 442 rushing yards, four rushing touchdowns, and six return touchdowns across kickoffs and punts.
His dominance under coach Lou Holtz included a standout two-year stretch with 84 catches for 1,756 yards, 11 total touchdowns, and a reputation as one of the most feared return men in college football history.
Golden Tate, a three-year starter from 2007–09, earned the 45th spot on the list with 157 catches for 2,707 yards and 26 touchdowns. Tate’s breakout came after a slow freshman season, culminating in a Biletnikoff Award-winning junior year with 93 receptions for 1,496 yards.
Beyond his receiving prowess, he added 227 rushing yards, three rushing touchdowns, and a punt return touchdown, cementing his place among Notre Dame’s all-time greats.
Both players exemplify the Fighting Irish’s tradition of producing elite wide receivers who excelled in multiple facets of the game.
