The spectator, seated in the first row, left the court clutching his left eye, visibly in distress, prompting immediate medical assistance. Djokovic, who was disqualified from the US Open in 2020 under similar circumstances, expressed shock and concern for the injured fan, while also acknowledging the emotional toll of such a penalty on Medvedev.
The match ended abruptly, adding to a chaotic day in Beijing as Hubert Hurkacz also retired from his semifinal due to an adductor injury while leading Alex de Minaur 6-4, 3-2.
