Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez provided an update on his recovery following an operation after leaving the Premier League match against Everton on a stretcher. The 34-year-old Argentina international suffered a collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite in the second half of the 2-0 win at Goodison Park, requiring medical attention for eight minutes before being stretchered off.
Manager Xabi Alonso confirmed Martínez was concussed and subsequently underwent surgery, which he described as successful on social media. Meanwhile, youngster Mike Penders made his Premier League debut as Martínez’s replacement and is now expected to start in Chelsea’s next three matches, including fixtures against Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United, and a Carabao Cup tie at Liverpool.
Penders, signed from Belgian club Genk for £17 million in 2024, impressed in his limited time on the pitch, earning praise from Alonso for his composure and adaptability. The manager emphasized the importance of squad cohesion, highlighting how Penders and other players stepped up when needed, particularly in cup competitions and high-pressure moments.
