Lakers principal owner Mark Walter and Thrive Capital investor Josh Kushner have settled the final conditions for the NBA franchise's transfer, a transaction valued at a league-record $12.5 billion. The two parties met at Walter's residence in Florida to finalize the deal, which now requires formal signatures and subsequent approval from the NBA Board of Governors to become official.
Kushner, who is partnering on the purchase with former Disney CEO Bob Iger, has confirmed to Walter that he possesses the necessary capital to complete the transaction. This sale marks a rapid turnover for the team, as Walter acquired a majority stake from the Buss family in 2025 for a valuation of $10 billion.
Walter, who also controls the Los Angeles Dodgers and Guggenheim Partners, is currently navigating a federal loan investigation and has reportedly been exploring the sale of his WNBA Sparks stake, though he has stated he will retain his ownership of the Dodgers.
