Manchester United supporters reignited a long-running rivalry with Manchester City by reviving their iconic ticker banner at Old Trafford on Saturday. The display, which originally marked 24 years since City’s last trophy in 2000, now shows 50 years since their 1976 League Cup win—ignoring the eight Premier League titles, four FA Cups, and other silverware City have claimed since Sheikh Mansour’s ownership began.
The banner’s return coincided with United’s first match following an independent commission’s ruling that found City guilty of serious financial breaches between the 2009/10 and 2017/18 seasons, a decision City have appealed against while denying wrongdoing. United fans also targeted City indirectly by referencing Rui Pinto, the convicted hacker whose leaked emails fueled the original allegations against the club in 2018, with a banner calling him a 'computer genius.' City face their first game since the ruling on Sunday, traveling to Liverpool, while United’s manager, Enzo Maresca, has vowed his side will prevail in their appeal process.
