Mamardashvili's late penalty save denies Northern Ireland win vs Georgia

Northern Ireland’s Nations League campaign remained untouched after a dramatic late penalty miss sealed a goalless draw against Georgia at Windsor Park. Liverpool’s Giorgi Mamardashvili made a crucial save in the 84th minute to deny Isaac Price’s spot-kick, following a foul on Ruairi McConville in the box.

Despite Georgia’s improved defensive structure under new manager Ramaz Svanadze—who replaced Willy Sagnol after a 1-0 loss to Northern Ireland in Tbilisi—Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s second-half flashes couldn’t break down a stubborn Georgian defense. Northern Ireland, led by Michael O’Neill, extended their unbeaten run with a fourth consecutive clean sheet, thanks in part to goalkeeper Pierce Charles’ heroics, including saves from Zuriko Davitashvili and Giorgi Tsitaishvili.

The draw keeps Northern Ireland atop Group B2 by a single point over Hungary, though Georgia’s resilience suggests Svanadze’s first win remains elusive despite Kvaratskhelia’s creativity. Northern Ireland’s early dominance faltered after Ethan Galbraith’s injury just past the hour, while Georgia’s late surge nearly paid off before Mamardashvili’s decisive stop preserved the stalemate.
