Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell confirmed that starting center Cade Mays is expected to return to practice this week after recovering from a wrist fracture suffered early in training camp. The injury occurred shortly after Mays signed a three-year, $25 million contract to replace Frank Ragnow, who retired last season, and fill the void left by the release of Graham Glasgow earlier this year.
While Mays’ return to practice does not guarantee immediate game action, it marks a critical step toward his potential activation within the 21-day evaluation window following a long-term injury. The Lions’ offensive line, which has allowed just eight sacks through four games but ranks 16th in rushing yards per carry, could benefit from his presence, though backup Juice Scruggs has stepped in effectively in his absence.
Campbell also noted that Scruggs may remain in contention for the left guard position upon Mays’ return, adding another layer of competition to the lineup decisions ahead of Sunday’s matchup against the Arizona Cardinals.
Mays and Pro Bowl safety Brian Branch are following the same recovery timeline, with both awaiting final medical clearance to participate in team drills. The Lions have historically preferred a two-week practice period before activating players returning from extended injuries, suggesting Mays’ return could still take time to translate into game-day availability.
His eventual readiness would solidify Detroit’s center position, where consistency has been a key focus amid the team’s strong but inconsistent offensive line play thus far.
