Leics make good start chasing 334 to beat Hants

Leicestershire reached stumps on day three at 156-3 in pursuit of a 334-run target, requiring 178 more runs to claim a vital County Championship Division One victory over Hampshire. The visitors were dismissed earlier for 363, with Nick Gubbins top-scoring on 133 before Ian Holland took 3-37 to reach nine wickets in the contest, alongside Ajaz Patel's 4-103.

Hampshire's final six wickets crumbled for 80 runs following dismissals from Holland, Patel, Ben Green, and Tom Scriven, while Manny Lumsden had departed earlier as a nightwatcher. In reply, Leicestershire built their chase through Ahmed's 55, while Scott Currie dismissed Rishi Patel—who joins Hampshire next year—for 1-27.

Both counties are battling relegation from the top tier, as a draw would instantly relegate both sides and the loser of a decisive result will be demoted to Division Two. To have any mathematical hope of staying up, Leicestershire must overcome a recent 27-point penalty for a sub-standard pitch, defeat Warwickshire away, and outscore Essex's haul against Glamorgan by 20 points.

Meanwhile, a victorious Hampshire would still need to defeat Sussex in their final fixture while counting on limited points for Essex.
