Lakers head coach JJ Redick left Quentin Grimes off the starting lineup for Friday’s preseason finale against the Denver Nuggets, a 121–106 loss at Crypto.com Arena, instead opting for a rotation featuring Luka Dončić, Austin Reaves, Matisse Thybulle, Ziaire Williams, and Walker Kessler. Grimes, who had started the first four preseason games and averaged 12.3 points, 2.5 assists, and 53.3% shooting in 24.3 minutes per contest, was not among the starters.
Redick suggested Grimes could still earn a starting role, noting the decision hinged on evaluating the team’s fourth ballhandler needs with Collin Sexton sidelined by injury. The coach emphasized flexibility, stating he was open to alternating Grimes with starters or even giving him extended minutes as a starter, though no definitive lineup was set for the season opener against the Golden State Warriors.
Sexton, who missed all preseason action, has been practicing more recently and continues to show progress in his recovery from a lower-leg injury. Meanwhile, Adou Thiero and Cameron Carr also sat out the game due to maintenance and a contusion, respectively.
