Lancashire has decided not to renew the contract of 44-year-old James Anderson for the 2027 season, leaving his professional playing career in uncertainty. The veteran seamer, who served as the county's Championship captain since mid-2025, had previously extended his stay through 2026.
Club officials notified him of this choice during the week of October 21, 2026, amid a broader operational review. This shift comes as Richard Kenyon replaces Daniel Gidney as chief executive and Paul Farbrace takes over from Mark Chilton as director of cricket.
Despite the team's poor 2026 season, where they finished second to last in Division Two, Anderson performed well individually. He took 50 wickets at an average of 17.68, ranking seventh in the division, while playing in 11 of 14 Championship games despite a calf injury.
Having retired from Test cricket on July 10, 2024, at Lord's with 704 wickets, Anderson later coached England's bowling attack during the 2024-25 period. With his departure, Lancashire must now choose a new captain from internal options like Josh Bohannon, George Balderson, and Keaton Jennings.
