LSU’s College Football Playoff hopes took a major hit Saturday night after the Tigers fell 35–34 to unranked Kentucky in overtime, marking their second road loss in the SEC this season. The upset came in Lexington, where Kentucky’s young offense—led by first-year head coach Will Stein—delivered two clutch two-point conversion attempts in overtime, including a dramatic second attempt that sealed the win.
LSU, favored and holding a 27–24 lead late in regulation, saw its momentum stall when Kentucky’s defense forced a punt and kicker Adam Zougai nailed a 33-yard field goal to send the game into extra frames. The Tigers’ offense, anchored by quarterback Sam Leavitt, briefly took the lead in OT with a rushing touchdown, but Kentucky answered with a touchdown of its own before Stein’s bold gamble on the two-point conversion paid off.
Despite quality wins over Clemson and Texas A&M, the loss to Kentucky—now 5–1 with a road victory over Texas A&M earlier this season—adds pressure on Lane Kiffin’s program, which can ill afford another setback if it hopes to remain in playoff contention.
