LISBON — Cristiano Ronaldo's sudden departure from Portugal's training camp has taken another dramatic turn, with Spanish journalist Edu Aguirre claiming the Al-Nassr forward felt "betrayed" by head coach Jorge Jesus.
Ronaldo left Portugal's camp in Copenhagen on Wednesday after a meeting with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença and following Jesus' press conference ahead of Thursday's UEFA Nations League clash with Denmark.
The dispute began after Ronaldo was left on the bench throughout Portugal's 2-1 victory over Norway. Jesus had said Ronaldo could come off the bench, but ultimately decided not to use the veteran forward despite him warming up during the match. Jesus later acknowledged that Ronaldo was unhappy about the decision.
According to Aguirre, Ronaldo subsequently held a private meeting with Jesus and Proença. Aguirre claims that Jesus apologised to Ronaldo during that meeting and promised to acknowledge his mistake publicly at his next press conference. Ronaldo reportedly believed the matter had therefore been resolved.
However, Jesus' subsequent comments did not contain the public apology Aguirre says Ronaldo was expecting. Instead, Jesus stressed that decisions over team selection remained his responsibility and denied that there had been a major incident between himself and Ronaldo.
Aguirre subsequently described the situation as a betrayal from Ronaldo's perspective. His account, however, remains an attributed claim: neither Jesus nor the Portuguese Football Federation has publicly confirmed that the coach promised Ronaldo a public apology.
Ronaldo later confirmed his departure from the national-team camp in a social-media statement. He said the decision followed Jesus' press conference and his conversation with Proença, adding that he would tell Portuguese supporters the truth about his reasons "in due course."
The Portuguese Football Federation confirmed that Ronaldo had left the camp and said preparations for the team's upcoming fixtures would continue with the remaining squad members.
Ronaldo's future with the Portugal national team is now the subject of considerable speculation, although he has not announced his international retirement.
