USC is struggling defensively during Big Ten play, giving up 35 points and 460 yards to Rutgers followed by 41 points and 504 yards against Oregon. Similar defensive collapses have followed coach Lincoln Riley since his time at Oklahoma starting in 2017, including major point totals allowed to Utah and Tulane in past postseasons.
The Trojans look to turn things around this coming Saturday, Oct. 3, when they host Washington at home.
Despite the team's ongoing defensive troubles, sophomore defensive lineman Jahkeem Stewart provided a bright spot by making his season debut against Oregon after recovering from a foot injury. Stewart played 34 snaps without restrictions following an injury to teammate Alex VanSumeren, making an immediate impact with two tackles for loss.
