Brigham Young University’s football program secured a landmark matchup with Notre Dame after a last-minute scheduling twist. BYU athletic director Brian Santiago initiated contact with Notre Dame athletic director Pete Bevacqua in October 2025, following a scheduling hiccup that left the Cougars needing a high-profile opponent.
Notre Dame had an open date after its rivalry game with USC remained unresolved, and Santiago’s outreach—facilitated by a connection through Notre Dame graduate Ryan Sweeney—led to a brief but pivotal phone call between the two ADs. Both programs were navigating playoff uncertainty at the time, with Notre Dame later withdrawing from the Pop-Tarts Bowl amid controversy.
Santiago’s supportive message to Bevacqua during that turmoil unexpectedly reignited discussions, culminating in an agreement for a 2026 showdown in Provo. The game, set for October 16 at 10:30 a.m.
ET, marks a rare opportunity for BYU to face a Power Five opponent and could redefine the program’s trajectory under the leadership of Santiago and Bevacqua.
